WhatsApp Overshadows Facebook as the Most Popular Mobile Messaging Service
According to a recent survey conducted on 4,000 smartphone users in five countries, almost 44% used WhatsApp at least once a week, as opposed to 35% using Facebook messenger. Thus, Facebook has been overshadowed by a new competitor in the mobile messaging market, WhatsApp, reports Business Insider.
Sounding much like the phrase, “what’s up”, often used informally between friends and acquaintances to ask how one is doing, this mobile messenger service has become the most popular in the past year. More than text-messaging now, mobile users prefer to opt for WhatsApp, BBM, and WeChat. Around 86% of the users are in regular use of these services.
The chief executive of WhatsApp, Jan Koum, claimed earlier in April this year that the mobile application had more users than Twitter and carried more messages than Facebook. The thing which users like about WhatsApp is that it is not too expensive, with its service being 69p in the UK with 65p per year charge, unlike other social media messaging services.
And the good news is that WhatsApp will remain ad free, at least in the foreseeable future, unless something changes the mindset of Koum, who believes that smartphones are not the place for advertisement, since we get so much of it otherwise. He is absolutely right on the mark here.
Younger generation seems to prefer faster and quicker things with no disturbance in their activities and for that reason, advertisement might seem catchy for a commercial-oriented project, but not if you really want to provide a service and be successful doing that.
Also, there are almost no errors reported for WhatsApp and transference of messages back and forth takes place without any issue. Facebook tried to buy out SnapChat, but got declined. If WhatsApp continues with its success, it might get acquisition offers soon too and Facebook could be one looking to grab the spot.
